Fall is the perfect time of year to start traveling in a new or used RV! It’s ideal because you can best get used to your new RV in short, weekend trips that give you lots of practice hitching up, towing, and setting up camp. Plus, there’s just something about autumn that makes camping especially nice. Check out our RV tips for first time RVers below so you can enjoy this new experience for all it’s worth!
Practice, Practice, Practice
Practice hitching up, taking repeated test drives, maneuvering, turning, backing up, pumping the breaks, and so forth. Just like learning to drive any other vehicle, getting comfortable in driving or hauling your RV requires practice – and lots of it.
The Tools & Accessories You Need
Ask us about different accessories and extra tools you may want to have on hand for your RV! You’ll benefit from the extra preparedness while on the road. Our parts catalogue gives you the advantage of a one-stop-shop with us. Get your RV, parts and accessories, and RV service all done in one place!
Slow Down
As you budget the time for your road trip, build in a few extra hours to get there. Driving or hauling an RV increases your weight, and it’s better for you – and other drivers – for you to go just a few miles under the speed limit. This gives you extra reaction time and more safety while on the road.
Wait Out the Weather
Mother Nature has a way of doing things her way – and it’s best to respect strong weather that may arise. Heavy winds or storms can make traveling more complicated or dangerous for anyone, but especially so when towing or driving an RV. Don’t think twice about pulling off if the weather gets bad to wait out bad weather. Keep an eye on the radar and get back on the road when things start to clear up.
Stay Alert and Well Rested
Commit to distraction-free driving! If it keeps your mind or your eyes off the road, put it down. Don’t text while driving, and stay away from all substances that may impair your ability to focus or stay alert. Even some over-the-counter medications can cause drowsiness, so hold off taking anything that doesn’t have to be taken at specific times. An energy drink isn’t really a good substitute for being well-rested, as they can often bring their own negative side effects that can impact your driving.
