Petrified Forest is best known for its Triassic fossils. It’s like having two parks in one, an ecosystem over 200 million years old with plans and animals now represented in the surreal landscape of the Painted Desert.

Things to Do
If you choose to drive through the Painted Desert, it’s about 45 minutes straight through as a scenic drive (just under 30 miles). But you can also hike the Blue Mesa Road, which is full of gorgeous viewpoints, so if you have plenty of time to spare, allow yourself to go at an unhurried pace.
Similarly, you can drive through Petrified Forest in about an hour – or take your time with short trails or back country exploration. Visitors can access Puerco Pueblo and Giant Logs – all bearing remnants of ancient fossilized and petrified history. Check out other offerings at the park here.
